It seems like kindness is becoming a rare commodity in this crazy world we live in. But do you know that as followers of Christ, we’re called to be nice to those around us, even when it’s difficult.

Ephesians 4:32 tells us to be kind to one another, tenderhearted, and forgiving. This isn’t just a suggestion – it’s a command from God. Being nice should come from a heart that’s been transformed by the love of Christ. We’re supposed to show the same love and grace to others that we’ve received from God. It’s easy to be nice to people who are easy to get along with, but what about those who rub us the wrong way? Jesus calls us to love our enemies and to do good to those who hate us (Luke 6:27). It’s not easy, but with the help of the Holy Spirit, we can show kindness to those who don’t seem to deserve it.

Being nice isn’t just about what we say, it’s also about what we do. We should be quick to lend a hand, to listen with empathy, and to show compassion to those who are hurting.

When we show kindness, we reflect the character of Christ to the world, and there are some great benefits for us!

Improved Relationships: Being nice to others can improve the quality of our relationships. When we treat others with kindness, respect, and compassion, it can create a positive atmosphere and help build trust and mutual understanding.

Increased Happiness: Studies have shown that being kind to others can increase our own feelings of happiness and well-being. When we show kindness to others, it can boost our mood, reduce stress, and create a sense of purpose and fulfillment.

Enhanced Reputation: When we consistently demonstrate kindness and empathy, it can enhance our reputation and help us build a positive image in the eyes of others. People tend to remember those who treat them well, and this can lead to increased opportunities and success.

Reduced Conflict: Being nice to others can help reduce conflict and promote peace. When we approach others with kindness and respect, it can defuse tense situations and prevent disagreements from escalating.

I think it’s pretty clear that we should all make an effort to be nice and demonstrate kindness toward others.

If you need a little motivation to keep you moving in the right direction, just remember the ultimate act of kindness that God showed us. He sent His Son, Jesus to die on the cross for our sins so that we could have eternal life. Let’s be thankful for His act of kindness and share it with others.

Pray this prayer every day this week as you work on growing in kindness:
God, help me to be kind to everyone I meet, even those who aren’t kind to me. Give me the strength to love my enemies and to show kindness to those who don’t seem to deserve it. Let my actions and words reflect Your love to the world. Thank You for your ultimate act of kindness of sending Your Son to die for me. I love You. Amen.
